How to Make Sharpie Patterned Pumpkins

Cute pumpkin ideas for Halloween! These easy-to-draw icons make cute little pumpkin decor, and all you need is a Sharpie.

I didn’t realize it but over the years, one of our specialties has been creating fun, simple and quick no-carve Halloween pumpkin tutorials!

I started looking through our pumpkin archives and realized we had a very small library. I can probably put this down to the fact that I don’t really like removing the innards from pumpkins, so I tend to make the mistake of not carving anything.

This year, I was feeling like drawing some little Halloween icons, so we went with a very classic approach and just got confident Sharpie pens. I think the fresh black Sharpie looks great on the little white pumpkins.

One trick I’ve learned in making these is to make sure your drinkware has fresh tips (not crushed or frequently used) and plenty of ink. This will keep your designs looking clean and clear.

I also especially recommend using dual tip Sharpies, so you have a thicker tip for filling in large areas and a fine tip for more detail.

I wanted to find a way to make this pretty much safe and secure, so I made a little diagram on how to draw each little icon.

We have a classic black cat, a scary bat, a little spider, and a moon.

You can of course add all your own ideas too!

It’s a bit like old how-to books, walking you through drawing things by just starting with a basic shape and adding more shapes to it.

Tips for creating cute pumpkins

So! Before you begin, it may be helpful to count the number of segments on your pumpkin.

Each pumpkin is shaped differently, but all have vertical sections created by small “seams” running down their sides.

I like to count the partitions first to see how many there are and plan accordingly. Then you can decide whether you want to arrange your design, place it in each section, or distribute it however you prefer.

Next just draw your designs!

You can go piece by piece if you like (for example, if you’re drawing cats, make all the ovals first, then go back and add the ears and whiskers), or complete each symbol before moving on to the next.

Just watch the spacing as you go.
