I’ve been dreaming of making a waffle-shaped Croque Madame, and I thought it would be the perfect Easter brunch recipe!

With Croque Monsieur, the bread is dipped in beaten egg before cooking, similar to French toast. The bread is sprinkled with cheese before cooking, which gives the outside a crunchy, crunchy texture.

  • 2 tablespoons of flour

How to make a Croque Madame

  1. Start by preparing the waffle batter according to the instructions on the box. Heat up your waffle iron. Leave it aside until you prepare the bechamel sauce.
  2. To prepare the sauce, heat the butter in a heavy saucepan over high heat. After it melts, add the flour. Beat for about two minutes. Add the milk and salt, and whisk until it begins to thicken (a few minutes). Add the nutmeg and half of the Gruyere. Keep on low heat while preparing waffles.
  3. Once the waffle iron is hot, spoon about 2 tablespoons of the wet mixture into the bottom of the waffle iron. Place a piece of ham on top of that, and sprinkle the ham with Gruyère. Spoon in another 2 tablespoons of the wet mixture over the cheese. Turn off the iron and cook as you would a regular waffle. Remove it from the heat when the mixture is cooked. Make as many as you want!
  4. Fry an egg sunny side up for each waffle. Put a spoonful of béchamel sauce on top of each waffle, then put an egg on top of the sauce. Serve with Dijon mustard, if desired.
