Tootsie Pops

When I first had the idea of turning Tootsie Pops into cherries, I was thrilled to see how well it worked, but I was also happy to use one of my favorite candies. One of the most charming aspects of Tootsie Pop Cherry Valentines is the mystery at their core. As the old question goes: “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll in a Tootsie Pop?” It’s a playful inquiry that adds an element of fun and excitement to the dessert-eating experience. Some may count every lick with bated breath, while others may give in to temptation and bite straight into the rubbery center. Regardless of the approach, every bite is a moment to savor and enjoy.

How to make cherries

  1. Cut strips of crepe paper 1/4 inch thick, perpendicular to the grain, and stretch them to soften the edges and lengthen the strip.

  2. Hot glue the end of the tape to the base of the lollipop and wrap it around the stick to cover it completely. Secure it with glue at the end and tear off the rest. Repeat with a second cherry or leave as one cherry stem.

  3. Wrap two cherries together at the top using a strip of crepe paper and secure with glue.

  4. Using the sheet template provided or printable, cut the two halves out of green crepe paper and glue them together by overlapping the center seam just slightly.

  5. Use the full sheet template to cut the same sheet shape from cardstock.

  6. Outline both sheets of paper with white paint and draw veins on the crepe paper sheet. For plain paper, use a white paint pen to write the recipient’s name and a little love message!
