The Hamptons is a dreamy little corner of the world where jungle meets beach in the perfect blend of wilderness and surf-town vibe.

But unlike California’s coastal towns, these small towns are held together by lobster rolls, upscale shopping masquerading as quaint villages, and New Yorkers eager to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Hamptons with kids

The Hamptons itself is a stretch of a few villages, from Southampton to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.

It’s a summer getaway and weekend getaway for New Yorkers looking for some rest and relaxation, with a great helping of upscale holiday vibe.

Although it has an amazing array of upscale restaurants, party venues, art galleries, and bars, it can also be great for families and kids. This post would be completely different if I were recommending an adults only trip!

The best beaches in the Hamptons for families

If you’re heading to the East End, you’re probably hoping to spend some time at the beach! And lucky for you, one of the best things to do in the Hamptons is beach hopping.

One thing I love about the Hamptons is that there are beaches that provide a slightly different vibe for every occasion. Here are some of our family favourites.

Copper Beach is a stretch of fine sand behind Billionaire Lane, a string of multi-million dollar beach homes owned by Manhattan’s wealthy elite. You can expect pristine sands, beautiful grassy dunes, and choppy waves.

Meschutt Beach has a completely different atmosphere. Since Tiki Joe’s is right on the beach and serves fried food and plenty of drinks, this area feels more touristy and crowded.

However, our kids love this beach because of the abundance of seashells and rocks that they can collect. I also love that the water is so calm and swimmable, even for our kids. Definitely worth a stop but don’t let this be the only Hamptons beach you visit.

Ponquogue Beach is a favorite for its laid-back local vibe and fine, soft sand. The water is a bit rough for swimming, but this is an ideal beach to set up camp for a few hours.

Be aware, each beach requires its own parking permit. Our rhythm was to go early in the morning before it got too hot, in some cases arriving too early to buy a parking pass. You can sometimes avoid fees this way.

But make sure you know the directions for the beach you’re going to, and avoid getting tickets!

One of my favorite things to do in the Hamptons has always been walking around the villages and doing some window shopping!

I love this mix of popular shops and local shops, often interspersed with great art galleries or restaurants in between.

For this kind of delicious summer wander, I love Southampton Village and Sag Harbour. Find a parking space and make your way to one side of the street and back to the other side.

There are quite a number of attractive toy shops and local souvenir shops in the villages as well, which certainly makes it attractive to any child.

Bonus points for stopping by for ice cream or gelato as a little charge while you browse!

Sag Pizza is a fun (if pricey) pizza place with great pies and a great aesthetic.

Rumba is a rum bar with a gateway to its sister establishment Cowfish. Both serve great cocktails and delicious food, but the atmosphere is relaxed enough for the kids to spend their lives.

Golden Pear is a great place for an easy lunch. Sandwiches and salads and outdoor seating so you can people watch in the village.

Bostwick’s Chowder House in East Hampton arguably has one of the best lobster rolls ever.

Hampton Maid is a charming place for breakfast, but make a reservation if you’re headed there on the weekend. This one is a little on the pricey side.

For a more relaxed breakfast, head to Hampton Coffee Company. The breakfast tacos are definitely recommended!

The Station Bar is a quirky local place with incredibly friendly people and great fish and chips. Grab a picnic table outside by the little boat port. On weekends they have bingo in the evenings.
