When I was a child, whenever I had a cold, my Portuguese grandmother would prescribe medicine for me Sarup.

This is an old school Portuguese concoction and is basically a hot drink. Warm water, lemon and honey. And if you’re older or if she’s feeling particularly bold, Grandma will pour you a little bourbon.

I swear by it for colds, and if you do a quick search on it, you’ll also find that a lot of people use a hot drink as a cold remedy at home.

But today’s recipe puts a modern twist on this ancient (and already delicious) cocktail.

Cozy holiday cocktails

I like to play mixologist, especially around the holidays.

There are so many great holiday flavors you can play with, and adding fun spices or garnishes to a cocktail is a festive way to celebrate the winter months.

Whether it’s simple wine or a mint-infused drink, it’s fun to sip and cheer with friends.

Make a hot drink for colds or coughs

Now, whether you believe my grandmother’s advice or not, a lot of people on the Internet seem to have the same idea.

Hot foods have long been known as a home remedy for fighting colds.

I’m not a doctor so I wouldn’t be so bold as to describe it to you.

But I do know that warm water and honey can soothe a sore throat, the vitamin C in citrus fruits is good for the immune system, and a shot of bourbon is sure to relax you enough to get a little jittery.

Cold treatment? You will be the judge.

citrus fruits. A traditional hot drink that uses lemon. To highlight the spices, I recommend using orange for this recipe.

Bourbon. If you prefer whiskey, you can also use it. For this recipe, I used Bulleit Bourbon.

Apple juice. I prefer unfiltered apple juice if you can find it, the apples taste much fresher.

honey. This is optional, depending on the sweetness of your cider.
