It took about 479 days, but the master bedroom renovation project was officially completed! Since we first toured this house in 2022, I’ve wanted to remove the wallpaper in the master bedroom. It was very crowded, not something I would have personally chosen, and seemed to overwhelm the room in general. You can keep scrolling to see what the room looked like before we moved in without furniture, and then also what it looked like for the almost year and a half we lived here without touching the walls.

I really came to wallpaper during this time frame, and felt like the old bedroom furniture we had complemented the look in some way. However, space never felt like it for us With the old wallpaper in place. Eventually, I decided I needed to take matters into my own hands and give the room a full dose of the “Carrie treatment.” You may remember that I spent a few days last year scrubbing the bottom of our bedroom walls. This was my attempt to bring personality to the room in hopes that I would end up deciding to keep the wallpaper on top. It definitely helped, but in the end it wasn’t enough to convince me that I could skip removing the wallpaper altogether.

So, John and I set aside one week this year to get the project done once and for all. The first step was to cover the washed portions of the wall with plastic. This was absolutely necessary since any moisture would soak into the pores of the limewash, causing it to stain. We taped plastic sheeting to the chair rail over the lime layer throughout the room, making sure it covered each of those sections of the wall. We pressed a little harder on the edges of the painter’s tape we used to hold the plastic in place, but we ended up with a little bit of seepage under the plastic and onto the lime wash. It stained the lime layer a little, but I think John and I are the only people who can tell you where those stains are. Once wet marks dry, they are barely visible.

Anyway, this was the first setup we did. Next, we scrubbed/rolled This recording tool All over old wallpaper. There are wheels filled with small sharp blades on the underside of the tool that puncture old wallpaper when pressed and rubbed over it. The goal of this step is to allow us Wallpaper paste remover solution To soak under the paper better, making it easier to loosen and peel the paper.

This is a wallpaper paste remover Which I have used in every one of my wallpaper removal projects (I think this is our fifth project in this house). It works great for cutting through the sticky paste on the underside of traditional wallpaper, and makes the removal process much faster. Oh, by the way, if you followed this link but saw my picture of the adhesive remover bottle after a few pictures, it looks like the brand I used has changed the look of their packaging, but I think it’s still the same stuff.

Our process goes like this. First, we punch holes in the wallpaper using that tool I mentioned above, then we spray the wallpaper liberally with adhesive remover. We leave that for 15 minutes or so, then we peel off a corner of the leaf and start removing the entire sections using the scraper. this group. We sprayed the walls with the putty remover solution every 10 minutes or so, making sure to go back to the areas we had already sprayed. You’ll need the wallpaper to be fully saturated and saturated with this stuff (which is why we had to cover our limewash so carefully – it’s a wet job!).

Be sure to follow the putty remover’s instructions for diluting the product if you’re using a concentrate, like we did. For what we bought– I mixed about half a cup of the solution Reusable spray bottle Fill the rest of the way with hot tap water. You will definitely want to wear mask While using this liquid solution because it gets into the air and causes irritation when breathing.

In order to use the putty remover as little as possible, we also used We have fabric steamer To penetrate wallpaper. The hot steam cut through the paste really well, and we were able to remove large, completely intact sections of wallpaper at once. All you have to do is be patient with this method as you move the steamer very slowly over the wallpaper until it can absorb it. I will also say that you definitely still need to use putty remover very liberally. A steamer, when used with putty remover, is just a nice way to use up a little less The ultimate chemical.

It took us four days to remove all the wallpaper from the walls in our bedroom, and as you can see above, it left the drywall in pretty terrible condition underneath. We think the liquid and vapor chemicals affected the drywall, because we had to soak it a lot and this is 60 year old drywall that couldn’t handle the moisture. The old wallpaper was also well glued to the wall, and parts of the drywall were peeling off with almost every pass Our scrapers. Some walls were better than others, but we still had to fix each wall individually.

So how did we fix it? Again, this was a very straightforward process, but took several more days to complete. We first distributed each of the clips using This product is Dap DryDex And Putty kniveslet the sparse areas dry overnight, then we sanded everything down to a super smooth finish.

It sounds so easy when I explain it, but it took it hours And days To end. There were gaps in the wall everywhere. But playing the podcast in the background helped me keep my mind busy during this tedious task. Then, when that was done, we had to take almost everything out of the room and cover the rest with plastic (including the cabinet and bathroom doors) before sanding. Then, of course, there was the sanding process, which took a long time. It’s safe to say that wallpaper removal is not a project for the faint of heart, but the results, as you’ll see when you keep scrolling, are lasting. always Deserves all the effort…

I didn’t realize how bad the room was pressuring me until the wallpaper was gone. I decided to paint the repaired walls a soothing off-white (the same “no filter” paint we used in our kitchen renovation project from Clare Paint), and I love how calming the space is now. The old wallpaper was too crowded and overwhelming, while the soft cream walls now fade into the distance, making the room appear almost twice as large.

You may have also noticed that we added new furniture to our bedroom! I have a lot of things to say about the new bedroom set, so I’ll save it for its own separate post. In the meantime, I hope you like how our 1960s bedroom came together in the end. I know some people will be sad that we got rid of the old wallpaper, and so am I Do I admit, it looks pretty nice. But I’m such a control freak that I don’t let someone else design the most visible part of my bedroom. Who knows, I might end up painting the space a bolder color, but for now I’ll lie there on this bed and enjoy the peaceful serenity of our off-white bedroom.
