Mod Podge Paper Mache Bowls

I don’t know about you, but paper mache played a big role in my childhood art classes. I don’t know if this was in the 80’s or if kids are still doing it today, but a lot of paste was made from flour and water.

This involved stirring a thick liquid vigorously (as the flour would never dissolve completely) and then dumping it on newspaper. This was a simple time.

Fortunately, times have changed. Well not that they’ve changed that much, but I’m here to show you how to make Mod Podge Paper Mache. So that you don’t have to struggle with mixing the ingredients and thick water. But why would you want to do that instead?

A typical paper mache glue recipe contains one part flour and two parts water. Some people mix school glue. And when you mix it? It’s kind of stiff. And remains thick in some areas. And doesn’t dry clean.

That’s why I use Mod Podge for my paper crafts!

Well, the nice thing about using Mod Podge to make paper mache is that you can use it straight from the bottle. There is no mixture. Podge can also be used to seal paint onto newspaper (if you choose to paint).

Plus you don’t have to worry about yellowing, flaking, or breakage like a mixture of flour and water. I highly recommend it especially for adult projects, if not for all of your projects.

But what if your Mod Podge is thick?

If your Mod Podge is thick, I do a few things. First I shake the bottle, then wet the brush and dip it into the pod (instead of just dipping a dry brush).

If it is too thick, you can pour some into a separate container and add a little water. You just want to thin it a little, not completely thin it.

notes

Costs for this project vary. I already had everything.

Some of my plastic wrap remained inside and I couldn’t remove it (I used cheap plastic wrap). This only increases stiffness so there is no reason to remove it if it sticks.
