This article was originally published on November 6, 2017, but I’ve edited it to add some new ideas to add to your Thanksgiving Day and updated the balloon links so they’re easier to find. We also have a printable version of this Tablescape which you can find here.

What are some of your Thanksgiving traditions? Maybe go on a Turkish trot on Halloween morning. Maybe watch a movie in the evening? I know a lot of people who watch a lot of football. One of Lars’s studio’s beloved traditions is watching the Macy’s Parade on Thanksgiving morning. The floats, the music, the dancing, it’s all so magical! As the cooking and baking preparations are in full swing, we watch the parade march through Central Park and there’s nothing better! Nostalgia at its best, that’s what the holidays are all about, right? So we bottled up our love for this tradition and created Macy’s Tablescape Day Parade for our monthly Tablescape series complete with taxi rank place cards! Say hello to a new Thanksgiving tradition.

It has been edited: The Today Show loved it so much they featured it in their Thanksgiving edition!

Mini Kids Parade Messi

11/8/23: I’m updating this post because now that I have kids we’ve added to this tradition and I thought I should share what we did – it was so much fun! In addition to the tablescape, last year I brought some oversized foil balloons for some of my favorite licensed characters for my kids, nieces, and nephews. We all blasted it and then turned on the music and walked around the house. You can see here:

Additionally, some of you shared this book with me: Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Macy’s Parade PuppeteerWhich tells the origins of the show. Jasper loves it! It’s very cool for kids. So, I read it first, then I showed the huge balloon.

  1. Cut butcher paper 12 inches wide and a length that will cover your table.
  2. Draw a dashed line with chalk to replicate the street line
  3. Cover your boxes with paper if desired, then paint them different shades of yellow. Let it dry.
  4. Paint the windows on your box “buildings” with gray paint. Let it dry.
  5. Place the black paper runner on your table and arrange your buildings in the cityscape in the middle.
  6. Inflate your mylar balloons and attach the balloon sticks.
  7. Stick the balloon on the buildings so that they appear to be floating above the city.
  8. Set the table with plates, cups, napkins, etc., and finish with a taxi place card for each guest!Macy's Day Parade Tablescape-8
