Let’s hear it for Drizzle! Spritzes are easy, summery, drinkable cocktails that are perfect for sipping with friends in the sunshine.

The Hugo Spritz is a lesser known but no less delicious relative of the Aperol Spritz. I am so excited to try it!

What is a Spritz cocktail?

You can trace the spritz cocktail back to 19th century Italy. Soldiers stationed there by the Austro-Hungarian Empire found Italian wine to be too strong, so they diluted it with a splash of water (hence the term “spritz”, which means splash in German).

This tradition has changed over time, and now the standard drink consists of two parts bitter liqueur (such as Aperol or Campari) and three parts prosecco.

There is also a “Spritz Trail” in Italy, through which you will find that each different region has its own style of drinking.

In the province of South Tyrol in northern Italy, a bitter aperitif is replaced by a homemade elderberry drink. So for those of us who aren’t as friendly, Saint Germain is a perfect alternative. And Hugo Spritz was born!

How is Hugo Spritz different?

When you include St-Germain or elderflower instead of a bitter liqueur like Aperol or Campari, the drizzle has a distinct shift in texture and flavor.

While Aperol Spritz is bright, sunny and somewhat bitter, Hugo Spritz is fresh, light and floral. The addition of mint and lemon brings out the botanical notes in Saint Germain and creates the perfect finishing touch.

The components you will need

St. Germain. The most accessible liquor is St-Germain. By all means, if you have access to the Elder Flower and you can Prepare your friendly drinkGo for it!

prosecco. If you find yourself without Prosecco, you can substitute sparkling white wine or champagne without significantly changing the flavor of the cocktail.

Carbonated water. I make it at home using soda water, but you can also use your favorite seltzer or soda water.

Lemon. A slice of fresh lemon makes the drink especially bright and beautiful.

Mint. The mint might be my favorite part of the recipe. It provides a fresh, tangy note on the Hugo Spritz and is particularly satisfying.

How to make a Hugo Spritz

  1. Add a few mint leaves and 1 oz. Saint-Germain to the Cup. Gently muddle the mint into the liqueur.
  2. Fill the cup with ice.
  3. Add 3 oz. prosecco and one oz. Carbonated water. Move gently.
  4. Garnish with a lemon wheel and a sprig of mint. Enjoy!
