How to make Halloween crackers

Have you ever tried Christmas crackers? It’s quite a fun tradition – I’ve actually been making cookies for my whole family for a few years. We made them old school style and stuffed them with paper crowns, jokes, and little treats.

Then I had some cookies left over and made Valentine’s Day cookies the following year. And guess what I just found in my supplies when I was cleaning things out? More cracker shots!

So we’ve revived the project again with a little post on how to make crackers for a fun Halloween activity.

What is a Christmas cracker (or Halloween cracker)?

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, cookies are little tubes that are filled with trinkets or candy.

There’s a little cookie inside, so when you pull on the sides of the cookie, it makes a loud noise, the tube opens, and all the candy falls out! What’s not to like about that?!

This was especially fun this time because I now have kids to give these things to! I let Hank and Mags help me pick out some little Halloween ornaments from the craft store to put inside.

Even though they knew what was there, they were insanely excited to open it! There’s something so satisfying about this Halloween activity.

Supplies you’ll need

Aside from the cookie shots, you probably already have everything you need for this Halloween activity.

Material:

  • The cracker snaps
  • Card stock
  • Clear tape
  • Double tape
  • Thin decorative paper (cheap wrapping paper is great!)
  • tape
  • scissors
  • Small gifts to stuff inside

How to make Halloween crackers

Time allotment: 20 minutes

  1. Start by cutting all the pieces to the correct size. Cut a 5.5-inch square of cardboard and an 18-by-7-inch piece of decorative paper. The paper should not be too thick, otherwise the cookie will be difficult to pull apart. Thin, cheap wrapping paper is ideal. Gather the rest of your materials. (Tip! If you have plain paper, draw a pattern on it like I did.)
  2. Roll the cards into a tube and close with tape.
  3. Place the tube on your paper. Insert the tool into the tube and center it. Tape the two ends of the tool down onto the paper on either side of the tube.
  4. Wrap the rest of the paper around the tube and secure with double-sided tape. Gather the paper at one end of the tube and tie it with tape.
  5. Insert your toys and jewelry into the other end of the tube, being careful not to pack them too tightly. Tie the end of the paper around the tube and trim the ends if necessary.

Try this Halloween activity with kids

Your cracker is ready! You can have people open it tug-of-war style, where one person grabs one end and pulls, or one person can separate both sides themselves.

Cookie cutters work best if you pull on the cookie sharply and forcefully. Make sure children are prepared to hear a loud, sharp, choppy sound.

Places to use Halloween crackers

These would be so cute for a class project or a gift at a class party!

If you’re really ambitious, you can even give these out to trick-or-treaters, depending on how many you usually get. Or you can do as we did, and make them for our kids to enjoy. I listen! xoxo

Notes

To open the biscuit, grab each end and pull it out sharply and quickly. You can also have two people hold the cookie, one at each end, and pull it apart like a tug of war.

Tell little ones to be prepared to hear a sharp, loud clicking sound when it opens!
