For the most part, John and I agree on home decor. He allowed me to take the lead since the interior design He is My passion, after all, but I always go over my thoughts before making any final decisions, and he’s always on my side. We also tend to decide which room to focus on in any given month. However, October is the one time of the year when we “go backwards,” so to speak. All in the name of Halloween. My husband loves it! And yeah…you guessed it…I kind of hate it, at least when it comes to the home decor aspect. But year after year, I do what any good wife does in these situations: I compromise.

I’ve talked about my lack of interest in indoor Halloween decorating several times in my 12 years of blogging here. However, you guys have seen me do it time and time again, all in the name of love. So, I’m back today with my first ever attempt at decorating our new house for Halloween. Keep scrolling to get all the details!

Well, truth be told, it wasn’t everyone In the name of love…I was hired by one of my favorite brands, Nolan interior (makers of our beloved sofa covers), to take photos and video Features modern Halloween decor. Of course, my first thought was John and how happy he would be that I had another reason to get all of our Halloween decor out of storage, so I agreed to the shoot. I also love a good challenge, and I knew this would stretch my creative muscles since I was that age Still Getting used to the space and lighting in your new living room.

The main problem I ran into was that I donated almost all of our old Halloween decorations before we moved last November. We were desperate to reduce our load before moving, so a lot of things didn’t make the cut, including our remaining skeletons, pumpkins, and the like. I only moved one small bag of Halloween supplies into our new basement (including the skeleton decor and fabric wreath you see above), so I finally needed to run out and do some shopping before I could take the photos I was set to do. .

On my shopping list? Anything black and orange, bat decor, maybe one or two of the traditional Halloween tabletop accents to make the point without going overboard, fall-colored faux foliage, and anything else that fits the palette. I ended up at Burlington, which had recently opened a store in our area, and found a pair of gray pillows with silver embossed metallic threads running throughout, a round black velvet pillow, and two fall potted plants (one in a white pot and one in an orange one that looked a bit like… pumpkin), black pedestal bowl, black vase, orange throw blanket, and two large black/white/gray art prints on clearance.

I spent about $125 in Burlington on all of that, then went to Michael’s, where I found… Illuminated ceramic pumpkin (It’s supposed to be painted, but I actually like the raw ceramic finish), plus a few other things Small orange pumpkin And Small black/white pumpkin Which I planned to cut up and use in the black base bowl I bought in Burlington. After getting everything home, I realized I was missing the bat element, so I ordered that These foldable bats are off Amazon.

I know I sound a little anti-Halloween up until this point, but I really am Lots of fun Put this space together for a shoot, and I love how the result turned out. It looks subtle to me, which I appreciate, and tends to focus more on the color palette than the design centered around comic Halloween characters. Note that most of them can stay out all fall, like the potted faux grass (I painted a ghost’s face on this white planter pot with a dry erase marker so it can be wiped clean after Halloween!) and the black pillows and accents. Using this type of transitional decor is my favorite way to decorate for the holidays.

Best news ever, though? John Adores How did that come together? He begged me to drop everything after the photo shoot, and I didn’t hesitate to agree. Our living room looks very festive right now, and it’s made the Halloween holiday feel even more present in our house. I may not like decorating with it, but I… love Halloween itself – the movies, the fall weather, the pumpkin themed appetizers, the themed baked goods…it’s all great, and I think the decor made it feel even more real. Maybe I was remiss in avoiding it all these years.
