A classic sugar cookie recipe that never fails! Try these easy sugar cookies with decorating and decorate them with your family and friends this holiday season.

When my sister, cousins, and I were little, these cookies were all we wanted during Christmas at Grammy’s house.

She baked a huge batch and let us freeze and decorate it (I always loaded up on sugar crystals as if it were my last day on Earth).

It’s not like a traditional sugar cookie — there’s a secret ingredient in the recipe that gives it just the right amount of sweetness.

What makes these easy cookies different?

It’s partially sweetened with honey!

I love it because it makes the cookies so light, so the combination of cookies and icing is just the right amount of sweet. There’s none of the overwhelming sugary flavor that a lot of sugar cookie recipes have.

And to me, they taste like being a kid at Christmas.

There’s something so relatable and poignant about pulling out an old family recipe and delving into the ingredients while imagining all your ancestors before you, measuring the same amounts of flour and sugar.

All of these recipes are perfect for holiday baking with family or friends.

Sugar cookie ingredients and icing

Biscuit ingredients

1/3 c fine Crisco
1/3 c sugar
1 egg
1/2 c honey
1/4 c butter (room temperature)
1 ton vanilla flavour
2¾ c flour
1 T baking soda
1 ton of salt

Icing ingredients

1/4 c milk
2 1/4 c powdered sugar

How to make sugar cookies

  1. Mix ghee, sugar, eggs, honey, butter, and vanilla well.
  2. Combine flour, soda and salt and add to the ghee mixture. After it is well mixed, place it in the refrigerator until it cools.
  3. Take it out of the refrigerator and knead it with your hands until the dough is soft enough to roll out smoothly and without cracking.
  4. Roll to about 1/4″ thick.
  5. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
  6. Place the shapes on a piece of parchment paper and place them on a baking tray. Bake for about 8 minutes at 350 degrees.
  7. Watch them closely, as oven temperatures vary and they bake very quickly. I like to take them out before they start to brown. Makes about 4 dozen cookies, depending on the size of your cookie cutters.

How to mix icing and icing cookies

  1. Place the sugar in a mixing bowl and slowly add the milk, little by little, whisking while incorporating the ingredients.
  2. Once the mixture reaches a thick gravy consistency, stop adding milk.
  3. Separate it into several containers and use food coloring if desired (I recommend Gel food coloring).
  4. If you have Ice squeeze bottlesAdd a different color to each bottle and gently press onto the cookies using a decorating knife or toothpick to smooth out any details.
  5. If you don’t have a squeeze bottle, simply pipe the frosting onto the cookies using a knife, spoon, or spatula. (Add decorations if you’re feeling festive!)

Tips and tricks for iced sugar cookies

I think these are cookies that get better with age, which is perfect! I love it the day after making it, when the frosting and cookies have had a chance to rest and get extra delicious.

This makes it perfect for serving at parties or gatherings because you can prepare it the next day.

Also, if you plan on helping your little ones decorate, I highly recommend using squeeze decorating bottles to make things easier for them.
