How to Make Santa Claus Handprint Salt Dough Ornaments

Preheat your oven to 300°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place a separate piece of parchment paper on your counter and use a rolling pin until your dough is ⅛ inch thick.

Have your child gently press their hand into the dough. Then, poke a hole in the top center or ornament with a stainless steel straw. Use a butter knife to cut along the shape of the handprint. Transfer the handprint to your parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat until your baking sheet is full.

Cook the salt dough in your preheated oven for about an hour. After an hour, check the ornaments – if they are firm, they are done. If the ornaments are still stained, cook them a little longer.

Let the ornaments cool, then decorate with glitter and acrylic paint. Use the standard red and white or create whimsical Santa Claus ornaments in different colors and patterns. To make ornaments last longer, you can seal them with moz podge or polycrylic.

Ideas for Santa Claus handprints

Salt rubbed ornaments look great on Christmas trees but have other practical applications. For example, you can use handmade ornaments as custom gift tags. Adding them to each grandparent’s gift makes your package look beautiful and makes for a special gift. You can also make garlands out of your salt dough ornaments and add them to your mantle or above the kitchen sink.
