Becoming Lime Ricki – The House That Lars Built

The Becoming series began in 2019. We wanted to hear from women in different walks of life and how they approach creativity, career goals, and more — mostly the whys and hows behind it all. It’s been great to do these interviews and get a “behind the scenes” look at so many inspiring women! You can see them all here.

We launched our second swimwear collection with Lyme Ricky Last week and the collaboration was a complete dream every time. I have no doubt that this is due in part to the sisters who run and manage it – Nicole Broder, Jennifer Anderson, Colette Callister and their amazing team. They are kind, generous, generous, encouraging, supportive, passionate… honestly, all of them are some of the best qualities I can think of and the best kind of people I could partner with. I didn’t know much about the company before we had our first meeting in 2022, and I’m constantly learning new things about them, like how they lived in Afghanistan when they were children. I can’t wait to get to know them more!

What do you consider yourself to be? For example: artist, designer, illustrator, maker, entrepreneur, teacher, etc.?

Creative people! We create a safe, happy space for women of all ages to feel comfortable and confident in their swimwear – a place where they’ll want to get in the water, and appreciate the body they’re in. We do this using well-designed swimwear, with fits that we’ve refined over the past 18 years to fit real women’s bodies, and to feel as comfortable as they fit. We love bold colors and prints and mixing and matching so women can express their personal style.

Where did you grow up? Were there aspects of your childhood that influenced what you do now?

We primarily grew up in Provo, Utah, where we went to high school – and have also had the privilege of living all over the world. We like to say that we had nomadic gypsy parents who loved to travel before travel was a thing. For example, they took us to live on the Navajo Reservation where my father worked as a defense attorney for the tribe — when Jennifer and Colette were 1 and 3 years old… and then we moved to Afghanistan for two years where Nicole was born. Our brave mother! Then after a few years we bought a Volkswagen bus, traveled across Europe for 6 weeks, then moved to Egypt where we lived for 2 years. We’ve been to India twice, the former Soviet Union (while it was still the Soviet Union!) Asia – all in the 1970s! These experiences gave us an insatiable appetite for travel, as well as an appreciation for other cultures and backgrounds and a desire to give back and make a difference.

We also love water and swimming. All three of us were lifeguards and swim instructors during the summer. [At the SCERA, haha! A local swimming spot].

What did you dream of becoming when you were young?

Nicole– Teacher, lawyer, mother – I used to decorate and redecorate my bedroom growing up – I love design. Due to my love of design and making things beautiful, my role at LR is to design all things design related, from websites/branding, stores, and suit design.

Jennifer– I wanted to be a professional basketball player, and an ER nurse (and I became one! ER nurse – and then I went on to work and became a nurse practitioner as well, all before Lyme Ricky). My left-brain skills make me the perfect woman to manage all business operations, including finances, shipping, and creating amazing spreadsheets 🙂

Colette-A lawyer…and I loved making clothes for my Barbie dolls and myself -My mother taught me to sew and made sure that when I was 10 years old, I would be able to sew clothes for myself 🙂 **This is what made me get a job as a production manager at LR, because I knew everything about Patterns and sewing. I have recently replaced that position and moved to the more lawyer-oriented side of my mind and I am very happy that I care about business strategy.

How has working with family influenced your work?

haha!! People ask us this all the time… We created LR so we could come together as sisters and make an impact. Although it certainly has its challenges, working together is also the best thing we could imagine – we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and we’re our own best cheerleaders. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs together, and working together has made us stronger and better. And our business trips are giant sleepovers!

Is there anything else you would like to “become”?

Oh, so much more! The older we get, the more we realize we can become. There are so many opportunities for us to continually grow and develop…and perhaps becoming something doesn’t mean doing something big, like owning a company or doing something great, but rather becoming the person you want to be. We are still working on it! We would also like to add that whatever we choose to do, no matter how big or small it may or may seem, this is our path to becoming. Lyme Ricky was and still is to us.
