Apple Crisp Macchiato – A Beautiful Mess

While I’ll probably forever be excited for a pumpkin spice latte in the fall, I have to admit that I love Starbucks’ new Apple Crisp Macchiato. it is delicious! So I set out to make my own homemade version that I could make at home anytime I wanted.

Introduction: In case you haven’t tried it, Starbucks’ apple crisp macchiato isn’t like a traditional macchiato, it’s a latte macchiato (so it’s more like a latte). It tastes like apples and cinnamon and is really a treat. Their standard is usually made with oat milk, but if you’re making your own at home, you can use any milk you prefer.

ingredients

  • espresso
  • Milk – any ratio or substitute such as oat milk
  • Crispy Applesauce Simple Syrup (see recipe below)

You may also want to drizzle caramel sauce over the top, but this is optional.

directione

First, make simple apple crisp syrup. In a small bowl, mix water with granulated white sugar and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat, whisking until the sugar dissolves completely. Then add the peeled and chopped apple slices and the cinnamon stick. Continue cooking on low heat for another hour. Then cover the bowl and put it in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, filter the syrup from the apple slices and cinnamon stick. Now you have a crunchy simple apple syrup.

Prepare two shots of espresso. Heat the milk and foam. If your espresso machine has a frother wand, this will be simple, but if not, you can use a foam wand. Milk foam Or a Frothy stick.

Add the syrup to your cup of coffee. Then pour in hot milk. Then pour espresso shots through the frothed milk. Top with caramel sauce, if using.

Tips for making

  • You don’t have to leave the apples and cinnamon stick steeping in the syrup overnight, but I think it deepens the flavor.
  • If you don’t want to throw away the apples, mash them and you’ll get applesauce!
  • Use any milk you prefer: whole milk, 2%, oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, etc.
  • If you don’t want to make simple apple crisp syrup yourself, you can use store-bought syrup Apple cider And a few sprinkles of cinnamon. I think homemade syrup is worth the effort, but that’s another option.

Home espresso makers:

We’ve tried many espresso makers over the years, and here are our favorites at different price points and skill levels:

  • Automatic espresso machine for cafe – My current device. It uses any whole beans, so if you use high quality beans, you will get a high quality espresso. It automatically makes espresso shots (no barista skills required) and includes a milk frother wand to heat and froth the milk. We have used this machine almost every day since we got it seven months ago and we love it! Comes in three colors.
  • Stovetop espresso – This is the cheapest way to make espresso at home. It is labor intensive and you will also need a way to grind your beans to get the best results. But this is a classic method that works great when done well.
  • Breville Barista Touch -We bought this for a good friend as a wedding gift once and they said they loved it. It’s a sophisticated machine that will need some barista skills to operate, but it’s an excellent home espresso machine.
  • Nespresso Vertuo – For those who want an espresso maker that uses pods, this is my favorite. Depending on the capsule you use, it can make espresso or coffee.
