When we talk about happiness, we often talk about the big moments in life. For me, buying a new house, watching kiddos grow up, publishing a new book, or even going on vacation are obvious moments of happiness.
But we don’t often talk about small moments. I mean these fleeting seconds where if you blink, you might miss it.
Have you ever paid attention to what makes you feel relaxed? We all know what makes us stressed, but very few of us understand what makes us feel better.
Glimpses are these small moments of everyday life that give us instant peace and happiness. And when you get a lot of them, it makes a big impact.

What is Glimmer?
Glimpses are those small moments in life that make you smile. They are the baseline of happiness.
From a more scientific point of view, They are the opposite of triggers. Triggers are moments that signal your nervous system to be on alert. To fly or get scared.
Your nervous system is always subconsciously scanning your surroundings for signals. Your sixth sense will scan situations and people, and tell you how to respond. It might get triggers or, hopefully, highlights.
glimpses are these subtle moments that Bring your nervous system to a state of relaxation and where you feel safe. They reduce your emotional stress and return you to a more controlled state.
It can be as simple as humming while working or smelling freshly baked cookies. And because there are so many of them More subtle than triggers, They may be difficult to notice.
Glimmers is a term coined by Deb Dana, an LCSW and psychotherapist. It is part of the polyvagal theory developed by Dr. Stephen Porges.
What is Glimmer Hunting?
Glimpses are all around us, but we don’t always see them. You may be in such a bad mood that you don’t notice the cherry blossom rain as you walk to the bus stop.
we need to Train yourself to find highlights. They can be predictable, like how you knew smelling a flower would bring happiness, or unexpected, like how you didn’t know a ladybug would land on you while picking weeds.
The best way to find the spark is to be patient and open. Start recognizing these flashes, and you’ll start noticing them more and more.
Every person will have different views Since we all enjoy different things. For me, seeing a frolicking bumblebee brings a smile to my face, but for others, they may get scared and run away.
Knowing your highlights can help foster a sense of peace and help you connect better with others and your surroundings.
Glimmers are a game changer for mental health. They may be small and concise individually, but together they become significant. They can help reprogram the nervous system into a calmer state than is often in flight or fight mode.
While out in the garden, you can catch many glimpses. Gardening can act as an anti-stress and therapeutic activity. It keeps you away from the stimulation of screens and hustle and bustle and allows you to take deep breaths and be amidst nature’s natural healing.
Here are some glimpses I got from my garden.
1. Seeing an earthworm bathing in the rain.
2. Getting to eat your first harvest of the season.
3. When there is a light layer of frost on the trees.
4. A leaf breaking in autumn.
5. Seeing tulips emerge for the first time after a long winter.
6. Washing dirt from your hands after running in the garden.
7. The sound of windchimes blowing in the air.
8. Garden with someone you love.
9. Blowing dandelion seed heads in the wind.
10. Cooking with ingredients from your garden.
11. A bee comes to your bee house that you built just for him.
12. When a beautiful volunteer plant blooms in your garden.
13. Sitting alone on your patio, enjoy the views of your garden.
14. Staying up late to see the stars.
15. Rain during drought.
16. Seeing a stranger passing by admiring your garden.
17. Uprooting a weed and also getting to the root of the entire danger.
18. Gift someone a homemade gift and tell them you made it just for them.
